I don't know why, but a pitch that I got via email to be on Entrepreneur's Enigma, I get a bunch every day, got my attention. I'm not going to reveal who it was, but I will say it's normally a pitch that I'd ignore, just because it's from a PR person, not the person wanting to be a guest. I get it, when you're a big name you don't have time to pitch. But, I can tell you on thing, getting a pitch from the person who wants to be on the show is much better than getting pitched by a PR person. They're the ones who keep refining, keep experimenting, and keep showing up with curiosity. That's exactly why I built the Podcast Mastery Learning Studio — a dedicated space for ongoing education, hands-on resources, and direct access to the expertise that helps you level up episode after episode. What's waiting inside the Studio The Studio isn't just another content library. It's a living, breathing workspace designed around the way podcasters actually grow. Use your show to build your brand, forge connections, and position yourself as a thought leader. The best ROI often comes from the relationships, not the ads. If you’re starting a podcast just to cash in, you might be disappointed. Focus on sharing knowledge, starting conversations, and growing your network. The REAL value is in the doors your podcast opens. Most podcasts won’t land huge ad deals. Instead, treat your show like a long game. Grow your skills, learn from your guests, and turn your audience into opportunities for collaboration and growth. Don’t expect overnight podcast riches—commit to consistency. The greatest benefits often come from the connections and insights you gain over time, not instant sponsorships or viral hits. Monetization isn’t just about ads. Think bigger: your podcast can create new friendships, partnerships, and business ventures. Invest in the process and see the value beyond direct revenue. --- - Published: 2026-02-05 - Modified: 2026-02-05 - URL: https://podcastmastery.coach/i-was-on-the-podcast-episode-of-wp-builds/ - Categories: On Podcasting - Tags: Guest Appearance, Nathan Wrigley, On Podcasting, podcast, podcasting, WP Builds I had the pleasure of being a guest on Nathan Wrigley's WP Builds podcast to talk about the evolution of podcasting. Especially when you have a larger catalog of content. This allows you to take a breather from the ongoing recording, editing, publishing grind and resurfaces some old gems. Happy New Year! It's okay to put a replay in your feed from time-to-time. Especially when you need a break or there's a good episode worth resurfacing. If you release episodes weekly, having a bonus replay episode during the week is an added bonus. If that's too much, then consider putting a bonus episode out once a month. This is especially beneficial, when you have a large catalog of interviews or shows. This gives each episode more shelf-life. And what's more, the AI co-hosts are going to be an intellectual property play for the podcaster. Say What? ! Honestly, Gary likes to make bold statements in the past. Not all of his "bets" have paid off. NFTs were definitely a bust, that's for sure and he was all in on those. But Why Not? With AI taking the Internet and world in general by storm, why not AI co-hosts? I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but I'm also not saying it's necessarily a good one either. The whole idea of having AI overtake podcasting is a bit of a stretch if you ask me. Yes, there's Inception Point AI, which makes 3000+ podcasts, about the stupidest subjects, a week all done via AI. But that's clearly an advertising play and if you've listened to any of their shows, they really suck. AI Does Has A Place In Podcasting AI is good at somethings. I'll admit, I've used AI for intros, outros, and segment breaks when I couldn't get a voice over artist involved fast enough. But AI taking over podcasting or even being a co-host on a show seems farfetched to me. Look, if I'm wrong, I'll admit it. But I don't think I am. I've been podcasting for 15+ years. It's hard to believe it's been that long. 2010 seems so far in the past and this journey has been a fun one. That's for sure. Many think that if they just start without a clear plan or an idea of a plan and they'll be fine and their podcast will grow organically. Too many times, I see budding podcasters just start a show, without a clear plan and then fizzle out after 3 episodes — frustrated and discouraged. It doesn't have to be that way. I swear! I'm a big proponent of not getting too much into the weeds and details before hitting record and publish, but I'm also a proponent of having an idea of a few things. What is it? Get organized from the beginning! Regardless of what type of podcast you're building out you want to have a concrete plan on how it's going to work. Some fields you'll want to are: Episode Number Name of the Guest Recording Date Status of the Guest (Approved, Scheduled, Preliminary Call Done, Edited, Uploaded, Scheduled, Published, etc. ) Published (Air) Date Explicit Checkbox (Just in case the conversation gets salty) And a spot for notes. What it has done is much more valuable. Don't let this discourage you. Podcasting has enabled me to build up a personal brand, build out a new division of Goldstein Media, Podcast Mastery, and indirectly HAS led to ROI. I do get some revenue, albeit a very small amount, from the advertising that's on my two podcasts from the Marketing Podcast Network. But that might be $100 a month if that. But, honestly, I'm not doing my Entrepreneur's Enigma and Digital Marketing Dive podcasts for the direct ROI, I'm doing them for the chance to be a subject matter expert. And in that way I've succeeded. I've had to break it to my clients that they're not going to be the next Joe Rogan or Mel Robbins. Those two had built in audiences from their TV shows and for being really well known across many different verticals. So I burst that bubble as quickly as I can when I'm working with my clients. It's important to set expectations. If you have 300 quality listeners every month to your show and they engage with you regularly, that's 100 times better than having double or triple that don't engage. When it comes to starting your own podcast there are two ways of going about it. The first is just hitting the record button and seeing where it goes. The second is sitting down and having a clear plan of where you want the show to go. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The first method can help to just test out an idea and see where your mind takes you. This can be good to get the ideas out. But not having a plan in the long run will make sustaining a podcast more difficult. The second approach takes more time but you’ll go into the podcast with a clear or clearer direction of where you want to take the episode and the whole show in general. The downside to the second way is that you can get stuck in the weeds and never actually hit record. The best way in my opinion is to do a hybrid approach to both of these methods. Make a quick outline of where you want the first show to go and hit record. Then after you're done go back with a critical eye and edit it for clarity. This will help you get started. Then start mapping out the next few episodes. Decide the duration of the shows, the cadence of when they will be released, and so on. Podcasts And Radio A Place To Share Podcasting, much like radio, started as a way to share stories, ideas, and entertainment with an audience. Traditional podcast monetization, like radio, has primarily relied on advertising, where podcasters produce content and advertisers provide financial support in exchange for airtime. However, as the podcasting landscape evolved, so did the need for a more audience-centric approach, leading us to Podcasting 2. 0 and the value for value model. The New Way To Make Podcasting Sustainable The value for value model is a refreshing and empowering concept that places the listener at the heart of the podcast monetization strategy. Instead of relying on ads, podcasters offer their content freely, inviting listeners to contribute in return for the value they receive—whether it's entertainment, knowledge, or community.   Here’s why this approach is so exciting for podcasters: Direct Connection with the Audience: The value for value model fosters a direct connection between podcasters and their audience. Listeners are encouraged to contribute whatever they feel the content is worth—whether it’s financial, creative, or through sharing the podcast. This direct exchange eliminates intermediaries and creates a more genuine relationship between creators and listeners. Creative Freedom: Without the constraints of traditional advertising, podcasters can dive into niche topics and express their genuine voice without having to cater to advertiser demands. This freedom promotes... --- > Learn how to identify and connect with your ideal podcast audience for business success. We’re going to explore how to find your niche and connect with the audience that will most appreciate and benefit from your podcast. Each show and interview is different. As a podcast host, one of the most important skills you can develop is the ability to conduct engaging and insightful interviews.   Your guests are the heart of your episodes, and the quality of your conversations can make or break your podcast's success.   To start off, I can’t stress this enough – preparation is key!   Before you sit down with your guest, take the time to research their background, expertise, and recent work. This will help you craft questions that are relevant, specific, and show your genuine interest in their story.   Prepare a list of questions that align with your podcast's theme and the interests of your target audience. However, don't feel like you have to stick to those questions. Use them more as a guide. Go with the flow and adapt and follow the natural flow of the conversation. Once you've done your homework, it's time to set the stage for a great interview.   Create a welcoming environment that puts your guest at ease. Whether you're recording in-person or remotely, ensure that your equipment is tested and ready to capture high-quality audio. No joke, I literally have to tell my clients, when we first start working together, we're not trying to be WHYY's Terry Gross. Non-fiction podcasts shouldn't be stuffy and overly edited. People come to your podcast to hear from you, get your personality, and learn something. If there is a gaff like an "um" or an "uh" it's not the end of the world. Honestly it's stranger when those "gaffs" aren't there, because it sounds unnatural. The most important thing to be at podcasting, is to know what you're talking about, have fun, and have a plan/format for the show. During my podcast coaching sessions, I work with my clients to come up with a plan of attack for their shows, a flow, and find the perfect format. Podcasting is a great way to generate quality content for your business, your brand, yourself. You can repurpose the podcast into clips and share them on social media. You can turn them into blog posts and newsletters. The sky's the limit. But you have to get started. Sometimes that means putting on a comfy outfit and just hitting record. I've been coaching businesses executives, entrepreneurs, business owners, and individual people the best tricks of the trade. I'd love to share them with you. If you want to learn my tricks that I've gathered over the 15+ years I've spent podcasting? There's always something to do. How you plan your day matters. Sometimes taking the shortcut and having someone book you on podcasts seems like a good idea. It's not. Out of the hundreds of pitches I get a week to be on my Entrepreneur's Enigma podcast, 95% of them get rejected. Want to know why? Because I'm being pitched by a PR or podcast outreach firm. Not by the person who I'm interviewing. It's not personalized enough. It feels half-assed and makes me feel like the guest really doesn't care about being on my particular show, but rather is using a scattershot approach to just get on a show — any show. Podcasting is a more personal medium that traditional radio and television. More often than not, you're dealing with a small show with a loyal following, run by one person doing most of the show prep, interviewing, and post production. If you want to make an impact, take an hour a day. Heck, a few hours a week and personalize your pitches to the podcasts you want to be on. Listen to a few of the shows and talk to what you like about an episode or the show in general. It takes time and energy. But if you want to be a guest and have a successful interview, take that time and do it right.
